Cutlery Organizer

Organization is one of the areas where I periodically try to apply my skills. This time I chose the cutlery drawer.

For a long time, the cutlery was stored in the organizer that came with the set when purchased. Made of thin plastic, after several months it had cracked quite a bit and acquired a very unsightly appearance. Ready-made solutions somehow didn't appeal to me, so why not develop my own?

Since the cutlery has quite a non-trivial shape - measuring them manually with calipers (which is how I model almost everything) would take too long, so I decided to photograph them. A regular grid sheet would have worked for scale, but I didn't have any at the time, so I had to draw the grid by hand using a ruler (here the standard cell sizes are 5x5mm):

Then everything is photographed from the greatest distance possible to avoid introducing too much error due to perspective. It's imported into CAD - at that time I was working in SolidWorks and traced with curves. I simply extruded the cutlery shapes from a parallelepiped, and in the remaining space on the table I extruded a simple rectangular box.

The walls could probably have been made thinner, but I can never overcome the desire to make everything as reliable as possible, and this time was no exception.

A test fitting in the middle of printing went perfectly - the built-in clearances were enough for the cutlery to be easily removed, but they were small enough for the cutlery to lie in a neat stack.

try-on

We finish printing and try it directly in the drawer (underneath you can see that same old organizer from the set):

By the way, remember those gold handles on the left - I'll write about making a batch of minimalist handles to replace them sometime.

And everything replaced and arranged in its place. I also printed a separate small box to fill all the space (later a couple more boxes will appear in the depth so the forms don't slide back and forth):

This organizer was made for the new cutlery set, for the old one (backup, for guests or when we don't want to wash the used forks) I later modeled and printed another organizer - but simpler, without precise contours for the dimensions:

I don't see much point in uploading the models anywhere, since they are too customized for the available cutlery and may not fit yours.
